When turning coves, beads and other fine details, nothing beats a sharp fingernail profiled spindle gouge. For rapid internal hollowing or fast smooth external cuts on a bowl, nothing beats a side grind. However, because of the difficulty in producing these edges (both require rolling the tool edge and swinging the handle at the same time) most turners have never really enjoyed the benefits of a well ground gouge.
